Upstairs/Downstairs: Dining at the Manor Partial Hands On at Cook's Warehouse Midtown

"The pleasure of your company is requested…" An invitation to a formal dinner requires grace, skill, poise, and the correct wardrobe for those attending from both upstairs and downstairs. Seating, serving, manners, and a mastery of your silverware can make or break you in a social situation! Many tune in each week to follow the drama of the Crawley family (and their servants) in post-Edwardian England. Chef Christy Seelye- King will explore the formality of dining in this period and help you hone the etiquette necessary to survive in a formal dining room setting. British social hierarchy will play out as each attendee will be given a name with their title/position attached, and we'll play a Dining Room Game that will test your best skills and manners with a 'mock meal'. Students will prepare two popular Edwardian desserts which tie in to the show and these will be served at the end of class:

Celebrity chefs all have a way with the knife because excellent knife skills go a long way in the pursuit of perfecting their cooking. Sharpen your knife skills in this hands on class that teaches the inside secrets to perfecting your slice, dice and julienne. Class topics also include selecting the correct knife for the task at hand, caring properly for your knives, and choosing cutting boards that are most suitable for your personal needs. Please bring sharpened knives to class so you can learn these techniques using your own tools. However, if you don't have your own knives, please let us know prior to class and we'll be happy to provide some for your use during the class. A light dinner will be served using the freshly chopped items from class.

In this book, James Beard award-winning cookbook author Cynthia Graubart expands her unique concept of using a 3 1⁄2- or 4-quart slow cooker coupled with two slow cooker liner bags to create two different dinners at the same time. Double dinners produce not only a tasty meal for tonight but also a wonderful second meal for later in the week or for the freezer. The inaugural Maryland Bacon Festival is coming April 26 (Noon - 10pm) at Rash Field in Baltimore.  Billed as a combined bacon block party and culinary festival, over 30 of the areas top restaurants will vie for top prize in appetizer, entree, dessert, and cocktail categories.  There'll also be a bacon eating competition.  The festival will bring thousands of folks out, including kids, who can enjoy their own bacon kid's zone.  Live music, cooking demonstrations.  The festival has it all.
